It is with great joy that we announce the elevation of our previously known Rwanda-Burundi Jesuit Region to the Rwanda-Burundi Jesuit Province. This is a tremendous blessing, and we are honored that H.E Cardinal Michael Czerny, SJ, together with Fr. José Minaku Lukoli, SJ, President of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM), witnessed this grace from God—who has entrusted us with His people through various ministries: schools, retreat centers, formation houses, and pastoral work.

These ministries have been, and continue to be, the canvas upon which we paint our calling. They are a constant source of gratitude in our daily mission as companions of Jesus. Our new Province has already borne many fruits in both Rwanda and Burundi. Today is truly a day of thanksgiving—to each and every person who has journeyed with us on this long yet rewarding path. We remain forever grateful for your support.

Fr. José Minaku Lukoli, SJ, pronounced the decree, officially marking the birth of the Rwanda-Burundi Province. As Fr. Fabien Gasigwa, our first Provincial Superior, remarked—we were born as a grown-up baby. The testimonies and reflections from various people reminded us Jesuits that becoming a Province is not a reward, but rather a mission—one that Jesus entrusts to us to nurture with care and love.

In his homily, H.E Cardinal Michael Czerny reminded us that we belong to the same family—the Church of God. This makes us brothers and sisters, and it gives us the responsibility to care for one another.

July 31st, 2025, was a day of double celebration for our Province: the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, our beloved founder, and a joyful toast to the birth of our new Province.

May Lord continue to guide us in becoming his favorite disciples and companions.

“Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding,
and my entire will,
All I have and call my own.
You have given all to me.
To you, Lord, I return it.
Everything is yours; do with it what you will.
Give me only your love and your grace,
that is enough for me.”

St Ignatius of Loyola, Pray for us.
