The new Rwanda-Burundi Province traces its origins back to 14 November 1995, when the Superior General of the Society established the Rwanda-Burundi District as a dependent Region of the Central Africa Province. Following that, the dependent Region became an independent Region by decree on 28 May 1999 and has since continued to grow. The previously Regional Superior, Father Fabien Gasigwa of the Society of Jesus is the new Provincial Superior.
This Rwanda-Burundi Province takes effect on 31st July 2025 ,the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola. This change embraces the already existing ministries: Education, social centers, retreat centers and pastoral work but increments the responsibilities.
